How to Enjoy Summer in Italy - even during a heatwave

Italy - summer - ItaliaMia Magazine

Italy in summer is a dream: golden beaches, lazy piazza afternoons, and evenings filled with gelato and music. But what happens when that dream is wrapped in 40°C heat and relentless sun? Here’s how to make the most of it - and stay safe while you do.

Time-shift your day

  • Wake up early: use the cool hours between 6 and 10 AM to explore cities, hike, or visit markets.
  • Siesta like a local: between 12–4 PM, slow down. Retreat to air-conditioned spaces, museums, or even take a nap - many shops close during this time anyway.
  • Evening revival: after 6 PM, Italian towns come alive again. Take a stroll (la passeggiata), enjoy a spritz, and plan your dinners late, around 8 or 9 PM.

Go underground or indoors

  • Explore underground wonders: visit Napoli Sotterranea, Rome’s catacombs, or Orvieto’s underground tunnels.
  • Churches & museums: they’re often cool inside and rich in art. The Vatican Museums, Uffizi in Florence, or Palazzo Reale in Naples offer hours of cultural immersion - plus AC.
  • Historic cafés: places like Caffè Gambrinus (Naples) or Caffè Florian (Venice) aren’t just elegant—they’re shady sanctuaries.

Chase water: coastlines & lakes

  • Coastal escapes: take a boat to Capri, Procida, or Cinque Terre. Morning swims in secluded coves or breezy ferry rides are pure bliss.
  • Lakes: Northern Italy’s lakes - Como, Garda, or Lago di Bolsena - are cooler alternatives to southern hotspots.

Eat light, stay hydrated

  • Seasonal meals: choose light, fresh foods - grilled vegetables, seafood, lemon sauce, summer fruits like peaches and melons. And, of course, gelato for extra refreshment!
  • Hydration is key: drink water constantly. Skip sugary sodas and limit coffee and alcohol during peak hours.

Dress smart

  • Loose, light-colored clothing: cotton, linen, and breathable fabrics are essential.
  • Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses: protect yourself from intense UV rays.
  • Sunscreen & portable fan: reapply SPF often and bring a handheld or rechargeable fan for queues or crowded transport.

In summary: you don’t need to cancel your plans, just reshape them: embrace early mornings, cooler evenings, water escapes, and slow rhythms. Let Italy teach you its ultimate style of life: the art of doing less, better. Buon viaggio!
